NHS Food and Drink Discounts

Food and drink is the category where the gap between what NHS staff expect and what is actually on offer is widest. Only two chains, Nando’s and McDonald’s, have tied a discount to NHS employment itself, and one of those comes and goes. Most of the real savings run through Blue Light Card, either as a percentage off or as a gift card bought below face value.

Discounts Tied to NHS Employment

At Nando’s, staff claim the 20% NHS reduction with a photocard ID in the restaurant or a verified NHS email in the app, and it stops at the first £20 of the cardholder’s own food and drink, so no visit saves more than £4. McDonald’s has offered NHS staff 20% through its app on and off since 2021, in promotional windows that open and close, so its value depends on whether one is open.

Blue Light Card Discounts at the Till or Online

Showing a Blue Light Card at a participating Starbucks cuts 10% from the bill, and KFC applies its Blue Light discount through the KFC app once a day on food bought and paid for at the counter. Pizza Hut restaurants take 25% off food for members, with Pizza Hut Delivery running a separate deal, and Domino’s has a member code for online orders. Gousto gives new subscribers a deeper introductory discount through Blue Light Card than its public offer. Subway has no national arrangement, and only some franchise groups take the card.

Gift Cards Bought Below Face Value

Where a brand has no percentage deal, Blue Light Card often sells its gift cards at a discount instead. Costa cards are sold at 8% off and work inside the Costa Club app, while Uber Eats and Just Eat Shopping Cards cover delivery orders across their platforms. Being a means of payment rather than a code, a gift card can generally sit alongside whatever promotion an order already has.

Delivery Memberships

Deliveroo Plus Silver is free for a year through Amazon Prime and has been offered free to Blue Light Card members, and students can claim it for up to three years. Uber One and Just Eat+ are paid memberships that remove delivery fees on eligible orders.

Brands Without a Key Worker Deal

Greggs has no NHS pricing, but its app gives the tenth item free in each category along with a welcome drink and a birthday treat. Wetherspoons has neither a discount nor loyalty points, and relies on low prices and club meals that include a drink.

Discounts in other categories, from supermarkets to mobile networks, are gathered on the NHS discounts hub.
