Mobile networks are where the strongest NHS deals in technology sit. Both O2 and EE run formal key worker schemes giving significant reductions on monthly contracts, while broadband and TV providers like Sky and Virgin Media carry no NHS-specific pricing at all. For devices themselves, savings tend to come through retailers rather than manufacturers directly.
Mobile Networks With NHS Discounts
O2 gives NHS staff 25% off the airtime portion of Pay Monthly contracts through the O2 Open scheme. The saving applies to both handset plans and SIM-only contracts. Verified staff can share discount codes with up to five friends or family members per year. Eligibility is confirmed through a work email address or payslip during sign-up.
EE offers 20% off monthly mobile contracts through the Perks portal, covering handset plans and SIM-only deals on eligible tariffs. The same family sharing arrangement applies, with codes available for friends and family who would not otherwise qualify.
Broadband and TV
Neither Sky nor Virgin Media offers a dedicated NHS discount. Both brands are more generous to new customers than to existing ones at renewal. The most practical advice for NHS staff on either network is to compare new customer deals at the point of contract expiry and negotiate accordingly.
The Sky page and Virgin Media page cover the current position at both providers.
Devices and Appliances
Apple has no direct NHS scheme. Savings on iPhone come through the networks rather than Apple itself. The Apple and NHS discounts page covers the O2 and Vodafone routes in detail.
Samsung similarly carries no NHS pricing, but buying Samsung products through Currys or AO is the more effective route as both those retailers carry key worker deals. Currys carries NHS voucher codes via Blue Light Card and Health Service Discounts across its full tech range. AO gives 5% off appliances through Health Service Discounts on ao.com.
Amazon has no NHS scheme, though the Prime free trial and Student rate for NHS staff also in education are worth knowing about.
How NHS Mobile Discounts Actually Work
The O2 and EE discounts apply to the airtime charge (the monthly service fee covering calls, texts, and data) rather than any device repayment. On a handset plan where the phone cost is spread across 24 months, only the service portion is reduced. On a SIM-only plan where there is no device cost, the discount applies to the full monthly amount, which is why SIM-only is often the better deal for NHS staff who already own a phone.
Both networks require employment verification before the discount is applied. O2 uses a work email address or payslip through the Open portal. EE verifies through the Perks portal in the same way. Neither discount is applied automatically at the standard checkout. Going through the correct portal first is essential, as buying through the main website without verifying first means paying the standard rate.
Blue Light Card vs Health Service Discounts for Tech
Blue Light Card covers NHS staff alongside police, fire, and ambulance workers and charges a one-off membership fee. Health Service Discounts is free to join with an NHS email and is exclusively for healthcare staff.
For mobile contracts, the NHS-specific network portals (O2 Open and EE Perks) are separate from both platforms and do not require a Blue Light Card to access. For tech retailers like Currys and AO, both platforms carry codes but the available discount and any minimum spend can differ between them. Checking both before purchasing on a larger item is straightforward and occasionally surfaces a better rate on one over the other.
For the full range of deals available to NHS and Blue Light Card holders, the NHS discounts main page covers everything currently listed across all categories.
